Things I have learned being a home owner....

So June will mark our 3 yr. anniversary of living in our first home! Our house was built in '69, so we knew there would be some maintenance issues we would have to deal with, but there were some other things that really surprised us! Here are just a few:

  • Older homes probably need new paint jobs every 3 years. When we first moved in, there was not one crack...now there is at least 1 or more in the majority of the rooms!
  • Just because you replace your AC doesn't guarantee a lower electric bill! The house itself is not energy efficient, so that definitely hurts the wallet! Ouch!
  • Some Homeowners Associations just suck.... end of story.
  • Having to deal with wild animals...we have seen possums, rats, armadillos and raccoons all in our yard/garage.
  • Having some good friends move away :-(
  • Making some new friends! :-)
So all in all it has been a pretty good experience! It will be nice when we eventually move into a bigger house though! When we get pregnant again, we really feel like we will need a lot more space, so we will definitely get a 2 story house! I'm sure that will bring on a whole new set of surprises!

Here's my question to you all: What things did you encounter as a new home owner?

Some of the same! Our house was remodeled and had brand new appliances, but we ended up replacing the AC unit also.. yeah we have payed on avergae about $250 a month! UGGHH!! Its alot more difficult to own your home, but we loved it.. now in the midst of selling, we will probably not by again until Roger retires in 12 yrs.. its just easier since we will move three more times..all in all its great!

Since we're two doors down, some of the exact same ones, including the possum! lol. Anyway, Rob is so frustrated some days he's like, "let's just get an apartment." I think home-owning is always a pain. We have high bills, weird pipes, rats, cracks, ants eating out the pool pump, defective sinks, etc etc etc. Should I go on to make you feel better?? :)

Funny, my next house will hopefully be one story. I'm sick of the life of a two story. What you want is always where you aren't. Good luck with that plan. I guess the up side is you get a LOT of exercise. :-)
